A client’s comfort and safety; my top priorities.
Recently, I had the opportunity to drive a young solo female tourist around for a few days. She wanted to explore some of the best spots around the Waikato and beyond, so I became her driver, guide, and, by the end of it, a trusted support person along the way.
We started off with a few Hamilton highlights, like the Gardens and the zoo. Great low, key stops to help her settle in and get a feel for the place. The pace was relaxed, and from early on, I could tell she felt comfortable. On nearly every drive, she ended up falling asleep, not from boredom (I hope!) but because she felt completely safe and able to switch off. That level of trust means a lot to me.
Even before our first full day of exploring, she ran into a common travel hiccup: a forgotten charger. She asked the front desk at her hotel if they could help, but they weren’t interested. No effort, no solutions. I checked my gear bag just in case I had a spare. I didn’t, but I wasn’t about to leave her stuck. I quickly found a few safe, nearby stores within walking distance that sold chargers and made sure she had solid options. Again, not something you’d get from the average driver, but I’m not in this to be average.
Later in the trip, she asked if we could combine a visit to the Waitomo Caves with her transfer to Auckland. No problem, I adjusted the plan, mapped it out, and made it work. I’m not locked into a rigid schedule or app; I work around what the client needs.
Along the way, she also asked to stop at a supermarket and a fast-food place. Nothing complicated, but she asked if I could go with her, just to feel a bit safer. Of course I did. It’s not something most drivers would offer, but I’m not most drivers. I genuinely care about my clients, and if I can help them feel safe and supported, that’s exactly what I’ll do.
The final drive up to Auckland was relaxed and smooth, making for a good way to end the trip. By then, we had a rhythm, and I knew exactly how she liked things. The car was playing her choice of music, not so quietly, in the background. Cabin temp was just right. Bags were loaded. No fuss. No stress.
For me, trips like this are a reminder that my role isn’t just about getting people from A to B. It’s about providing peace of mind, personalised service, and the kind of care that makes travel feel just a little bit easier.
And let’s be honest, you’re not going to get that kind of flexibility or follow-through from a corporate cab, app based service, or even a chauffeur service. Their drivers might open a door or smile politely, but they’re on the clock, not on your side. I’m here to make sure the whole experience works for you, not just the ride.
That’s the kind of service I’m proud to offer, and it’s moments like these that remind me I’m on the right track. I am The Driver. I am your Driver. I am there for you.
